Is there any risk in placing a vacuum sealed mason jar into the freezer? Thanks for all the great information. I have run into an odd issue with the last three jars of soup that I froze in freezer safe wide mouth canning jars.
When I unscrew the ring and lift the lid they make a loud popping noise, it sounds a lot like popping a champagne cork. The soup looks and smells fine, but I have been afraid to eat it. Any ideas on why this is happening and whether it is safe to eat?
Not likely in a frozen situation, but possible upon thawing that you could see it, especially if it was something that contained anything that could begin to get rancid of go down the spoiling route quickly. Hi Julia, The problem with those quarts is the presence of shoulders on the jars. People have frozen in them but the need to leave so much space empty in the jar for expansion before reaching the shoulders can be space prohibitive. I just bought pint glass jars to freeze second batches of my sauces, opened the package, and then saw on that jar chart that says they are not freezer safe.
Is it because of the shoulders? Because I feel like the wide mouth pint jars have shoulders too, but they are deemed as freezer safe. Wow, I just saw the previous post about the shoulders.

To prevent glass jars from breaking in the freezer, avoid storing glass jars on top of, or next to, or beside, the cooling element of the freezer. Your jar will still freeze and be plenty cold if you store in the door of an upright freezer, or near the top, or in a basket of a chest freezer. And the chances of your jar breaking go down! Storing the jars close to each other can cause them to rattle every time you open the door.
Plus storing them close can change the rate at which the jars freeze. When I freeze muffin batter or freeze multiple loaves of bread , I usually use the plastic storage bags. Here are some other ideas for preserving:. Why do mason jars break in the freezer? Is lead crystal stronger than glass? Hi Lewis! I admittedly know nothing about crystal whatsoever. Hopefully someone can chime in with their thoughts! I find your suggestions very helpful. Can you please clarify your suggestion to leave the lid a little loose and also to freeze the jar on its side.
