If you don't need to edit their text or output them in vector format, leave these layers as is and save your file in Photoshop's PSD format, or as a TIFF or other bitmapped output option. Look for image layers among your template's assets, either Smart Objects or regular pixel-based layers.
You can edit these layers, use them as is, or apply, remove or hide effects and masks on them. However, you can't paste new pixel-based information onto existing image layers. To replace an image layer in a template with new material, you can place, paste or drag visuals from other image files and drop them into the same position in the layer stack as the template's placeholder layer.
To copy masks and effects on a new replacement from an existing placeholder, hold down the "Alt" key and drag these elements from the placeholder to the new layer in the Layers panel. To move masks and effects from layer to layer, simply drag them to their destination without using the keyboard. Double-click on each adjustment layer to review how it alters the layers below it. When the Properties panel opens, it displays the adjustment-layer information using a context-sensitive interface that changes to reflect the layer type.
The best part is that you can save your template to re-use over and over again. Note: If you plan on using this tutorial to make social media templates, make sure to download and utilize our free social media image size cheat sheet here. In this tutorial, we will be creating a document for print, however you can also apply this to anything, whether it be for print or web based. When creating documents for print I have both the width and the height set for inches.
I'm going to keep this particular document size at 11 inches for the width and 14 inches for the height. I would change that to pixels if I was working on a document for web. Keep in mind, as far as resolution, when you're creating something for print, you do ideally want to have pixels per inch. If the template is for web use, between 72 and pixels is acceptable. Background contents will be white. Press OK. You will want to have the Photoshop Ruler feature turned on as it will help you create the shapes you need for the template.
You should now see Photoshop rulers appear. Obviously if you want to turn it off later, you can just click Rulers again in the menu to uncheck it. Now we need create a layout of different shapes for our template which we will use to drop images into later.
In Photoshop you want to work on separate layers for each shape that you create. Here in my layers panel , I am going to go down to the bottom and click on the new layer icon. You will see it's a little square with a folded up corner.
To create a Point Text layer, click Type Tool on the Tools panel, and then click where you want to place a text. Type some sample text so that the users know what kind of data they are expected to enter.
You should see something like this:. You may want to manage the template's behavior in the web-to-print designer, for example, by locking a layer position preventing a user from moving it but allowing the text string to be edited. Formatting in Photoshop is not flexible enough for this. That is why we have created a system of so-called markers - special symbols which you add to a layer name, used by Customer's Canvas to manage permissions for each element.
You can find details on a syntax of the markers and a complete list of them in the Supported Markers topic. So, as the last step of this tutorial, let us configure the template to disallow changing the background and the text position.
This exercise gives you an idea of how to work with the markers. There is no difference in what position you place the marker - in the beginning of the name, in the end, or somewhere inside a line.
Moreover, you may leave only the marker if you like. You can lock the text position in a similar way. Now if you upload the modified template to the server, you see that the background disappears from the list of editable objects and the text position is fixed. However, what if you already have a number of PSD files created by a designer before they become aware of the way the systems work together? If you load those files in Customer's Canvas, they might not look as you would expect.
